Recently several issues have been reported to LANDesk Software regarding LANDesk Antivirus 9.5.

The root cause has been traced to defects in Kaspersky auto patch “B” released on 02/05/2013.

The following unexpected behavior has been observed:

  • System slowdown/freeze,
  • Unavailability of Kaspersky icon in tray
  • LANDesk Antivirus client UI does not open
  • Slow log in times
  • Computer hanging at shutdown
  • Internet Explorer crashing

The problem can affect random machines running Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7 operating systems with LANDesk Antivirus 9.5 installed.

According to the preliminary analysis the issues are caused by the file bl.ppl (8.1.0.898) which can cause deadlocks.

Kaspersky lab has provided private fix PF80 to resolve this issue.   The patch is attached to this bulletin.

This patch has undergone limited testing, and should only be applied to affected systems that have patch B installed.  However, it has proven successful with LANDesk Antivirus customers and Kaspersky branded Antivirus customers.

LANDesk Software Distribution and/or Patch Manager can be used to distribute this patch to end systems.

A custom definition that provides detection and remediation through LANDesk Security and Compliance Manager has been attached to this bulletin.

This definition can be imported and used to deploy this patch. Patch_pf80.exe should be extracted from the archive and placed into the patch storage folder.

Antivirus patches installed on clients can be viewed by right-clicking the Kaspersky “K” icon in the system tray and selecting “About”.

Recommended command line for installation of patch: “patch_pf80.exe /when now”

This patch will require a reboot before the changes take effect.

LANDesk Software and Kaspersky lab apologize for any inconvenience caused by this automatic patch release.  Kaspersky lab has taken measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
