Sync from Active Directory - Using Manager property in AD severely impacts performance

An ALM user experienced severe performance issues with AD Sync when including the Manager data from the AD source.  The sync accesses around 21k users from AD.  When adding the Manager from the AD source data, the Sync slows down to an intolerable level.  Without Manager, we can traverse all 21k records in AD and make inserts/updates in 90 minutes. Without it, we are 10 hours into the sync with only 2000 records processed.  So 1.5 hours for 21 thousand records vs. 10 hours for one-tenth that amount.  The sole difference is the Manager source column being included or excluded.

We have a successful workaround that bypasses the need for the synching Manager from AD.  The issue still exists, but is not impacting the user at present.

I am confident it is a program issue the comes from the fact that the Manager property in AD is not a text property like others.  It holds reference to the Manager's AD account.  Synchronizer must use this reference to locate Manager's User account.  This takes about 20-30 seconds per account added or updated.

I am looking for confirmation of this performance loss from others and any other views that verify or contravene my thesis as to the reason. Have you experienced this as well?
