TLS in gmail causes outbound email failure

I'm helping a client set up the outgoing email in LDSD using a gmail server that uses TLS.  The username and password has been verified, so the account isn't the problem.  We've tried the OOTB port (25) and the port which was used for a "competitve" product (587) neither of which tests successfully.
